We began as as a six-man team in 1996. Our team was a combination of players from three schools: Macklin, Denzil, and Luseland. Previous to that, Luseland had their own six-man team known as the Lords. When Macklin, Luseland, and Denzil joined to form a team, the team took Macklin School's team name, the Sabres, and Luseland's team colours, white and green.
From 1998 to 2002 Macklin played in the Northwest (Saskatchewan) nine-Man Football League. In both 1999 and 2000 the Sabres made it to the league finals only to lose Lloydminster.
After four successful seasons playing nine-man football the Sabres had to bow out of this league in the middle of the 2002 season and the local six-man league was kind enough to let us play some exhibition games in their league. The Sabres have been playing six-man ever since.
In 2011, we built our own clubhouse, with the help of Lindsay Feser, coaches, players, and parents. The clubhouse is used today to host all Sabres football equipment and their changeroom.
The 2018 Sabres had their most successful season thus far. The team ended their regular season with just one loss, travelled to Viscount for the Provincial Quarter Final and won, then hosted Wakaw for the Provincial Semi-Final, losing by just one point.
The Sabres have worked closely with the newly developed minor football team, the Macklin Hawks, who play in the North West Minor Football League. When this team was created, a committee of community members was developed called the Macklin Football Association. This group has worked hard to build a facility anyone would be proud of. We now have an electric score clock, donated by the Macklin Credit Union, and a score keeping building that had the materials and work donated by Alliance Developments, RONA Macklin, and Reinbold Electric. Through a few successful Sportsman Dinner's, this committee has raided enough money to build a new tower that hosts a booth, storage, the Macklin Hawks clubhouse, second level announcers booth, and two spotting booths, as well as permanent lights, that has allowed the teams to play all games in the evenings.
Currently, the Macklin Sabres football team plays six-a-side football with SHSAA.
